FEATURING ONE OF THE FINEST
COACHING STAFFS IN THE COUNTRY

Dayna Smith
Cornell University Head Coach

Dayna Smith just finished her sixth season directing the women's basketball program at Cornell. Over her tenure at Cornell, Smith has built a strong young nucleus which has climbed up the ladder in the Ivy League, culminating in an

Ivy League championship and berth in the NCAA Championships in 2008.

The 2005-06 squad, which was selected to finish last in the Ivy League, exceeded all expectations by finishing the season with an 8-19 overall record and a 5-9 mark in the Ancient Eight, good for fifth in the conference standings. She also helped forward Jeomi Maduka earn Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors, while being named second-team All-Ivy.

Before accepting the position at Penn, Smith held a similar position at her alma mater, Rhode Island. Smith spent three seasons as an assistant for the Rams, including a three-month stint as interim head coach during her final season in Kingston. Her head coaching responsibility came at the age of 25, making her the youngest head coach ever at URI.

Smith spent three summers as camp director at Rhode Island, facilitating a camp membership growth of 525 percent over a three-year span. She was also responsible for the hiring, training and supervising of more than 50 camp counselors while designing daily camp activities.

Val Klopfer
Cornell University Assistant Coach

Val Klopfer, a former starting guard at Wake Forest, just completed her third year as an assistant on the Big Red women's basketball staff.

Her main responsibilities with the Big Red include serving as the recruiting

coordinator, working on the development of the team's guard play, game and practice preparation, as well as team travel.

Prior to her arrival to Ithaca, Klopfer worked as an assistant at Albany during the 2002-03 campaign. She assisted with a variety of the duties within the program, including game and practice preparation along with recruiting. In their first season in the America East, the Great Danes were one of five teams in the nine-team conference to post a winning record on their home court at 7-6. The Great Danes finished the season with a 9-18 overall record and a 3-13 conference mark.

Kloper was a four-year letter winner at Wake Forest and finished her career ranked seventh all-time at the school in 3-pointers made. She started in 53 contests as a member of the Demon Deacons, including every contest her sophomore season, and recorded a 1.17 assist-to-turnover ratio, the fourth-highest career total at the university. A dean's list student and a member of the ACC Honor Roll, Klopfer received a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education with a minor in psychology in May of 2002.

A native of Albany, N.Y., Klopfer is a 1998 graduate of Bishop Maginn High School, where she lettered in basketball and track. She helped the school's basketball team to an 84-9 record and four conference titles over her four years.
