FEATURING ONE OF THE FINEST Mike SchaferCornell University Head Coach When Mike Schafer was hired as Cornell's 12th head hockey coach in 1995, his goal was to bring the Big Red back to the top of the ECAC Hockey League. During his 10 seasons on the Big Red bench, he has accomplished that objective, winning four ECACHL tournament titles and staking a claim to three regular-season crowns. Schafer has guided his Cornell squad to five NCAA tournament appearances in his first decade, including the Big Red's first run to the Frozen Four since 1980 in 2002-03. His team has consistently been ranked among the nation's elite over the last four seasons, reaching the No. 1 overall ranking in 2002-03 and 2004-05. In 2004, Schafer was voted the ECACHL Coach of the Year by his peers for the third year in a row, having also received the honor in 2002 and 2003. He is also a three-time finalist for the Spencer T. Penrose Award, given to the national coach of the year. He is just the second Big Red hockey coach to reach 200 career victories, and he is the only Big Red mentor to win ECACHL championships in his first two years. In 1997, the team won a record-setting ninth ECACHL tournament championship and maintains the lead with 11. Over the years, Schafer has coached 32 All-ECACHL picks and 14 ECACHL All-Rookie team selections. In 2004, goalie David McKee was named ECACHL Co-Rookie of the Year before putting together one of the dominant seasons ever by a goalie on his way to 2005 ECACHL and Ivy League Player of the Year honors. Among the players whom Schafer has coached in the last 10 years are two ECACHL Players of the Year, three Ken Dryden Award winners, three Defensive Defensemen of the Year, three players who have been named Defensive Forward of the Year a total of four times, two ECACHL Rookies of the Year, seven players who have been named first-team All-ECACHL nine times and two players who have been named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans a total of three times. Eleven of Schafer's former Cornell athletes entered the 2005-06 season having signed agreements to play in the National Hockey League system. A 1986 Cornell graduate, Schafer was a four-year letterman on defense for the Big Red. He was a team captain for two seasons and capped his college career by leading the skaters to the ECAC championship and a No. 5 national ranking in his senior year.
Casey Jones, a 1990 graduate of Cornell University, returns to his alma mater for the 2008-09 season as the Associate Head Coach for the men's hockey program. Jones spent the last 13 years at Ohio State, where he served in the same role as associate head coach for the Buckeyes. During his tenure in Columbus, Ohio, Jones served as the program's recruiting coordinator, a position he excelled at as he had five players drafted in the first two rounds of the National Hockey League Entry Draft over the last eight seasons. Jones will be making his second coaching stint on East Hill after beginning his career behind the bench from 1991-1993 under Brian McCutcheon. During his initial time at Cornell, Jones recruited many of the players who would ultimately capture the 1995-96 and 1996-97 ECAC Hockey Championships, the first two seasons of Mike Schafer's coaching tenure at Cornell. In his 13-year stay at Ohio State, the Buckeyes qualified for the NCAA tournament in three of the last six seasons, including a Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Super Six title in 2004, the Buckeyes' first in 32 seasons. In addition to his recruiting efforts, Jones, who worked primarily with the defensive, power-play and penalty-killing units, guided the Buckeye defense to a number two national ranking in goals-allowed per game and third in the nation in penalty killing in 2002-03. He also led the Buckeyes to a number-five ranking in penalty-killing percentage in 2004-05, helping Ohio State to the NCAA West Regional. Prior to going to Ohio State, Jones spent two years at Clarkson University, helping the Golden Knights to a 43-19-9 record, an ECAC Hockey championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament in 1995. Jones was a four-year letter winner as a player for the Big Red, serving as team captain in 1989-90, leading Cornell to a 16-10-3 mark that year. For his career, he scored 112 points on 30 goals and 82 assists while playing in 112 contests. Jones was also the winner of the Bill Doran Sportsmanship Award and was selected by the Boston Bruins in the 10th-round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. Contact Coach Jones by email at: cpj9@cornell.edu
A graduate of Western Michigan, Scott Garrow was a four-year letter winner for the Broncos. As a player at WMU, he set a school record by playing in 161 consecutive games. During that span, Garrow compiled 41 goals and 61 assists for 102 points. He scored a career-high 15 goals in 1991-92. Garrow received honorable mention for the All-CCHA Academic Team (1991, 1992). Garrow joined Cornell in June 2003 as an assistant coach and is in his second stint with the Big Red. He assisted coach Schafer from 1995-99 when he worked with the forwards, goaltenders and the power-play units. Garrow began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at WMU during the 1994-95 campaign. During 1999 -2003, Garrow was an assistant coach and worked with the Broncos' forwards and goaltenders and was responsible for breaking down game tape and scouting video. Garrow has also helped USA Hockey evaluate talent at the Michigan Select 16 and 17 Festivals.
