FEATURING ONE OF THE FINESTCOACHING STAFFS IN THE COUNTRY
Over the span of 11 seasons, one man has been
a leading force in Cornell's return to national prominence in lacrosse.
The progression forward is far from over, but head coach Jeff Tambroni
is pleased with the journey. After serving as an assistant coach with
the Big Red from 1997 to 2000, Tambroni became the second Richard
M. Moran Head Coach of Lacrosse in June 2000. The position was endowed
in March 2000 by gifts from Cornell lacrosse players and numerous
friends of the program.
Tambroni led the 2007 team to a Final Four
Apprance and it’s fifth Ivy League Championship in a row, with
a 6-0 record. He also guided them to a 15-1 over all record, and a
1st place national ranking.
Tambroni's time with Cornell has been filled
with milestones and a resurgence of one of the greatest programs in
the history of collegiate lacrosse. One of the best young coaches
in the nation, Tambroni began the 2006 campaign ranked ninth in the
nation among active Division I coaches in winning percentage (.681)
and hit the 50-win plateau just three games into the season. He became
the fourth head coach in Cornell men's lacrosse history to reach 50
wins, and he did it in his 72nd game, faster than all but the legendary
Richie Moran, who finished his fifth season with a victory over Princeton
to achieve a 50-12 record. The 2004 Ithaca Journal Male Coach of the
Year and two-time national Coach of the Week, Tambroni has overseen
five consecutive seasons with nine or more wins on East Hill, including
three seasons in which the team achieved 11 victories.
During his head-coaching tenure, Tambroni's players have earned 21
first-team All-Ivy honors, including three Ivy League Player of the
Year awards and two Rookie of the Year selections. He has also helped
his players to earn a combined 23 All-America honors, including defender
Ryan McClay `03, who was a four-time All-America selection and earned
a spot on the first-team in 2002 and 2003. Under Tambroni's tutelage
Joe Boulukos '06 became the first Big Red player in nearly a decade
to win one of the major USILA honors, earning a share of the Lt. Donald
McLaughlin Jr. Award as nation's top midfielder. Tambroni also stresses
excellence in the classroom, resulting in five of his players earning
ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, including Casey
Stevenson '05, who was named to the 2005 Academic All-America Second
Team.
Having just finished his sixth year at the helm of the Cornell lacrosse
program, Tambroni is coming off an outstanding 2006 campaign in which
the Big Red went 5-1 in the conference, winning a share of its fourth-straight
Ivy League title, the longest stretch since Cornell won 10-straight
championships between 1974 and 1983. The Big Red also won 11 games
in the regular season for the first time since the 1987 team went
into the NCAA Tournament with an undefeated record of 11-0. Under
Tambroni's guidance, Cornell rose to as high as No. 2 in the nation
in the March 20 Inside Lacrosse media poll, and found themselves among
the national leaders in scoring offense, scoring defense, scoring
margin, man-up offense and man-down defense. The Big Red made its
third-straight trip to the NCAA tournament, and fourth overall during
Tambroni's tenure, where it was eliminated by eventual national runner-up
UMass in a dramatic 10-9 contest.
The 2005 campaign was arguably the best in Tambroni's young career
as the Big Red went undefeated in Ivy League play and won its first
outright Ivy title in nearly 20 years. Cornell finished the regular
season with a 10-2 overall record and took a spectacular 12-11 opening
round victory over Towson in the NCAA tournament before falling to
eventual national runner-up Duke, 11-8. For his efforts, Tambroni
was honored by being named the co-Head Coach for the Division I North
squad at the 64th annual North-South Classic.
Ben DeLuca Cornell University Assistant Coach
Benton DeLuca was promoted
to the top assistant position under Coach Jeff Tambroni in the summer
of 2003 and just finished his fourth season as the Big Red's defensive
coordinator. Since rejoining the coaching staff in 2002, DeLuca has
helped the Big Red to two 11-win seasons, a pair of nine-wins seasons,
and four Ivy League titles. In 2004, he became the first Mario St.
George Boiardi `04 Assistant Coach of Men's Lacrosse after the position
was endowed.
DeLuca, a former captain and assistant coach
at Cornell, returned to his alma mater in the summer of 2002 after
working in the business sector in New York City for two years. His
passion for Cornell and the lacrosse program are boundless, and his
experience and knowledge are invaluable in the program's recruiting
efforts. He assists Coach Tambroni in a great number of aspects on
and off of the field and continues to build the Cornell defensive
unit into one of the best in the country.
After donning the Carnelian red and white for
three years under legendary coach Richie Moran, DeLuca became a captain
his senior year under former head coach Dave Pietramala. A four-year
letter winner on defense for the Big Red, he was voted as his team's
outstanding senior athlete for his leadership and dedication on and
off of the field. Subsequent to earning his bachelor of science degree
in nutritional sciences and biochemistry in 1998, DeLuca joined the
Cornell coaching staff as an assistant coach under Pietramala and
current head coach Jeff Tambroni for the 1999 and 2000 seasons. During
his first stint as an assistant coach, Cornell improved each year
and DeLuca assisted in leading the Big Red to its first 10-win season
in 13 years, including a hard-fought victory over upstate rival and
eventual national champion Syracuse on Schoellkopf Field in 2000.
Cornell earned a berth in the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championships
that year; its first since his freshman campaign in 1995.
Kyle
Georgalas Cornell University Assistant Coach
Kyle Georgalas, a former first-team
All-Ivy and honorable mention All-America selection as a player at Cornell,
was named an assistant coach upon his graduation in the summer of 2005,
and just finished his second season on the bench for the Big Red.
In just his first year, Georgalas helped Cornell
to its second-straight 11-win season and its fourth consecutive Ivy
League championship.
As an assistant coach on Coach Jeff Tambroni's
staff, Georgalas undertakes a myriad of responsibilities. On the field,
Georgalas is in charge of face offs and substitutions, while assisting
in all facets of the defensive unit. He also serves as recruiting
coordinator for the staff as well as performing other administrative
duties.
Georgalas headed up the Big Red defense in
2005 and served as a team captain during his final two seasons. During
his senior campaign, Cornell held its opponents to fewer than eight
goals per game, largely due to the fact the Georgalas held opposing
attackers in check throughout the year. The team's most respected
leader, Georgalas collected 37 ground balls as a senior, leading the
Big Red's close defense unit in that department. He was selected to
compete for the North team in the 64th annual North-South Classic,
and was drafted by the New Jersey Pride in the fifth round of the
2005 Major League Lacrosse collegiate draft.
Eric
Genova Cornell University Volunteer Assistant Coach
Eric Genova enters his second
season as a volunteer assistant on Coach Tambroni's staff. A native
of Denver, Colo., Genova is involved in all aspects of the program,
including developing and implementing practice and game day strategy.
Prior to coming to the East Hill, Genova served
for three seasons as the head lacrosse coach at Smoky Hill High School,
where he was nominated for Head Coach of the Year in 2005, and was
the recipient of the Ken Ratna Sportsmanship Award in 2006. Genova
was an assistant coach at Smoky Hill for one season and was nominated
for Assistant Coach of the Year in 2003.
Many of the Cornell Big Red
lacrosse players will assist with instructing and counseling
both on and off the fields!
