FEATURING
ONE OF THE FINEST
COACHING STAFFS IN THE COUNTRY
Bryan
Scales
Cornell Men's Head Soccer Coach
As he begins his tenth season at
the helm of the Cornell men's soccer program, Bryan Scales continues
to build the Big Red into one of the most respected in the region and
in the Ivy League. He has compiled a 56-77-13 record over his first
nine years and has had his teams ranked in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 in
four different seasons.
The 2005 campaign was highlighted
by a pair of memorable Ivy League victories. First, Cornell topped No.
18 Penn 2-1 in Philadelphia, Pa., before returning to Ithaca to take
a dramatic last-second victory over Harvard.
The 2001 team finished the year
ranked No. 22 nationally with a record of 9-4-3 and Scales was selected
by the NSCAA as the 2001 New York-Division I Coach of the Year and was
named a finalist for the 2001 NSCAA/adidas Division I National Coach
of the Year award. The team ended the 2001 season with a six-game unbeaten
streak and was 7-2-2 over the final 11 games of the campaign. The Big
Red knocked off NCAA quarterfinalist Penn State 3-1 during the regular
season and beat perennial New York challengers Hartwick, Columbia and
Syracuse to finish the season ranked second in the New York region.
Scales' 2001 team allowed only 15 goals all season. In 2002, the squad
opened with a tie at Notre Dame and put together a three-game win streak
in the early stages of the season before finishing with a 4-8-4 record.
Scales has traveled extensively
to observe the training methods of some of Europe's top clubs. He spent
time with the English Premier League champions, Arsenal Football Club,
observing training and speaking with both coaches and players about
training techniques and methods. In the past, Scales has also visited
Glasgow Celtic of the Scottish Premier League and Middlesbrough FC,
another English Premier League club. He was fortunate to attend the
2001 Scottish League Cup Final, as well as the UEFA Technical Symposium,
as a guest of the Scottish Football Association. In 2003, Scales spent
time at training sessions for the Chicago Fire of MLS.
